PhD Studentship: Investigating the influence of the gut microbiome on host metabolism

PhD StudentshipThe gut microbiome is widely recognised as one of several potentially causal factors in various chronic diseases influenced by diet.  The gut microbiome is linked to host metabolism with microbiota implicated in both lipid and energy metabolism. Whilst this is widely acknowledged, there remains significant work in understanding these host-microbe interactions. This represents an exciting PhD opportunity to join a dynamic multidisciplinary research program exploring the influence of diet and microbial changes on host metabolism. The project will involve both in vitro metabolism studies as well as characterisation of gut microbial and metabolomic profiles following human intervention studies. The successful candidate will further use computational modelling approaches to understand the influence of the human gut microbiome and host metabolism. The project sits on the interface between human metabolism, the microbiome and immune health and will provide critical new data which will inform a broader program of work using nutritional- and microbiome-based approaches to prevent chronic disease.Key duties and responsibilitiesThe PhD candidate will conduct a specified programme of research under the supervision of Dr Susan Joyce, Professor Ines Thiele and Professor Jens Walter.The successful candidate will be able to apply metabolomics expertise to define host-microbial relationships.To competently conduct research activities, including the planning, organizing, conducting of metabolomics studies and to report and communicate research findings across the overall scope of this project.Significant interdisciplinary interactions with collaborators in APC Microbiome Ireland and externally will be required.Good communication, organisation, interpersonal skills and the ability to work within a project team are essential.To coordinate and perform a variety of independent and team activities involved in the collection, analysis, documentation and interpretation of study data.To present information on research progress and outcomes to others responsible for the research project.To engage in frequent communications with key stakeholders and the general public, including the use of social media platforms.To confer with the assigned Academic Supervisors in developing plans for research projects and to discuss the interpretation of results and the preparation of manuscripts for publication.To engage in appropriate training and professional development opportunities as required by the Principal Investigator, School or College in order to develop research skills and competencies.To perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.Involvement in Educational and Public Engagement (EPE) activities.Occasional laboratory supervision of Bachelor or Master students.QualificationsA BSc, or preferably, an MSc (or equivalent degrees) in Biochemistry (Metabolites) or Microbiology and an interest in bioinformatic applications or a related topic is required. Dalton and is available from the beginning January 4th, 2022, subject to an initial one-year probationary period. The MPL has made tremendous advances in understanding host-parasite interaction, principally by applying various –omic technologies to both parasite and host.
